Washing Machine Not Draining or Spinning? Common Causes and When to Call an Engineer
A drum full of dirty water is a horrible sight. So is a load of soaking clothes that just won’t spin.
The good news? Many drain and spin faults have a simple cause. Some you can check yourself in ten minutes. Others need an engineer.
Here’s the short answer. Check the pump filter, the drain hose and the load first. If the machine still won’t drain or spin, stop. And if you hear humming or grinding, or smell burning, call an engineer straight away.
Why is my washing machine not draining?
Water stays in the drum when it can’t get out to the drain. These are the usual causes.
- A blocked pump filter. Coins, hair grips, tissues and fluff collect here. It’s the most common cause we see.
- A kinked or squashed drain hose. This often happens when the machine gets pushed back after cleaning.
- A blocked waste pipe or sink trap. If your kitchen sink drains slowly too, the problem may be the plumbing, not the machine.
- A failed drain pump. You might hear a hum with no water moving. Or you might hear nothing at all.
Why won’t my washing machine spin?
Spin problems and drain problems often go together. Most machines won’t spin until the water has gone. So a drain fault can look like a spin fault.
- An unbalanced load. One heavy item, like a bath mat or a duvet, can stop the spin. The machine senses the imbalance and slows down to protect itself.
- Water left in the drum. Fix the drain problem first, and the spin often comes back.
- Worn carbon brushes. Machines with brushed motors wear these down over time. You may notice weak spins before the drum stops turning altogether.
- A motor or control board fault. These need a proper diagnosis. Guesswork gets expensive.
- The wrong programme. Some delicate and wool cycles spin slowly or not at all. It’s worth a quick check.
Safe checks to try first
Before you pick up the phone, try these steps.
- Switch the machine off and unplug it.
- Put down old towels and a shallow tray. The pump filter usually sits behind a small flap at the bottom front.
- Unscrew the filter slowly. A lot of water can come out, so take your time.
- Clear out any debris and screw the filter back in firmly.
- Check the drain hose behind the machine for kinks.
- Spread the load out evenly and run a rinse and spin.
Check your manual if you can’t find the filter. Don’t force the door open while there’s water inside.
A recent job in Ickenham
A customer in Ickenham called us when their washing machine stopped mid-cycle. The drum was full of water.
They’d already cleared the filter. It still wouldn’t drain.
Our engineer took a look at the drain pump. A small piece of bra underwire had slipped through and jammed it. He fitted a new pump and ran a full test cycle. The machine was draining and spinning properly again the same day.
Advice from Phil
“If you’ve cleared the filter and it still won’t drain, stop there. Running it again and again can burn out the pump. And pop bras and baby socks in a wash bag. That little habit could save you a callout.”

When to call an engineer
Call us if any of these apply.
- The filter and hose are clear, but the water still won’t drain.
- You hear humming, grinding or loud banging.
- You smell burning.
- The same error code keeps coming back.
- Water is leaking from underneath the machine.
What happens when we come out
There’s a callout charge for a home visit. Our engineer finds the fault and tells you what it will cost before any work starts. No surprises.
Sometimes a repair isn’t worth it. On an older machine with worn drum bearings, for example, a new machine may make more sense. If that’s the case, we’ll tell you straight. We can help with the replacement too.
If the blockage is in your household waste pipe rather than the machine, you may need a plumber instead. We’ll let you know.
