Spring Clean Your Appliances: Essential Maintenance Tips for London Homes
Spring is the time of year when most of us turn our attention to the home. Windows get opened, cupboards get cleared out, and suddenly every corner of the house gets a proper once-over. But while you’re busy deep cleaning the kitchen and sorting the garden, it’s worth giving your home appliances a little attention too.
At Domestic Repairs Ltd, our engineers cover homes across Ruislip, Hillingdon, and the wider Greater London area. Every April, we see a familiar pattern: appliances that have been quietly struggling through the winter finally give up. A bit of simple seasonal maintenance can prevent an inconvenient breakdown — and in many cases, extend the life of your appliance significantly.
Here’s what we recommend checking this spring.
Washing Machine
Your washing machine works hard all year, but the winter months put extra demands on it — heavier laundry loads, thicker fabrics, and more frequent use all take their toll.
What to check:
- Clean the filter. The pump filter collects lint, coins, and small items that build up over time and restrict drainage. It’s usually located behind a small panel at the front of the machine. Check your manual for access instructions.
- Run a service wash. Once a month, run an empty cycle at 60°C with a washing machine cleaner or a small amount of white vinegar. This helps clear bacteria, limescale, and detergent residue from the drum and pipes.
- Check the door seal. Inspect the rubber seal around the door for mould, damage, or debris trapped in the folds. Clean it thoroughly with a damp cloth.
- Don’t overload. Spring bedding swaps often tempt people to cram too much in. Overloading is one of the most common causes of drum bearing failure.
If your washing machine is making unusual noises, not draining properly, or leaving clothes wet at the end of a cycle, it’s worth getting it looked at sooner rather than later. Find out more about our washing machine repair service.
Dishwasher
After months of entertaining over Christmas and the colder months, your dishwasher has probably earned a thorough clean.
What to check:
- Remove and clean the filter. Most dishwasher filters are located at the bottom of the appliance. Rinse under warm water and use a soft brush to remove any grease or food residue.
- Check the spray arms. The small holes in the spray arms can become blocked with limescale or debris, reducing cleaning performance. Remove them if possible and rinse under running water, using a toothpick to clear any blocked holes.
- Run a cleaning cycle. Place a dishwasher cleaning tablet in the bottom of an empty machine and run a hot cycle.
- Inspect the door seal. As with the washing machine, check for cracking, mould, or debris around the door seal.
Poor cleaning results, a bad smell, or water pooling at the bottom are all signs that your dishwasher may need attention beyond a routine clean. Learn more about our dishwasher repair service.
Fridge Freezer
Warmer temperatures are on the way, which means your fridge freezer will be working harder over the coming months. Spring is the ideal time to make sure it’s running efficiently.
What to check:
- Defrost the freezer if needed. If you have a manual-defrost freezer, a significant build-up of ice can reduce efficiency and eventually prevent the door from sealing properly.
- Check the door seals. Close the door on a piece of paper. If you can pull the paper out easily, the seal may need replacing.
- Clean the condenser coils. If your fridge has accessible coils at the back or underneath, dust build-up makes the appliance work harder and increases energy use. A vacuum with a brush attachment is all you need.
- Check the temperature. Your fridge should run between 1–4°C and your freezer at -18°C. Use a thermometer if you’re unsure.
If your fridge freezer isn’t cooling properly, is making a loud humming noise, or the compressor seems to be running constantly, call us before the warmer weather makes things worse.
Oven and Gas Hob
Spring is a natural time to give your oven and hob a thorough clean, particularly after months of hearty winter cooking.
What to check:
- Deep clean the oven. Remove the shelves and soak in hot soapy water. Use an oven cleaner or a bicarbonate of soda paste on the interior walls, avoiding heating elements. A clean oven heats more efficiently and is a fire risk reduction.
- Check the door seal. Oven door seals degrade over time. A damaged seal means heat escapes, cooking performance suffers, and energy bills increase.
- Gas hob ignition. If burners are slow to light or producing an uneven flame, the burner caps may need cleaning. Remove them and clean around the ignitor carefully.
- Fan ovens. If your fan oven is taking longer to heat up or cooking unevenly, the heating element or fan motor may need attention.
For gas appliances, always use a Gas Safe registered engineer for anything beyond routine cleaning. Our team can advise you on the right course of action. See our gas hob repair service.
Tumble Dryer
The tumble dryer tends to get forgotten until it stops working. Give it some attention before the summer, when a long spell of rainy weather always arrives without warning.
What to check:
- Clean the lint filter after every use. A blocked lint filter is the single most common cause of tumble dryer inefficiency — and a build-up of lint is a fire hazard.
- Check the exhaust vent (vented dryers). Make sure the external vent isn’t blocked. A restricted vent causes the appliance to overheat.
- Condenser units. If you have a condenser dryer, remove and rinse the condenser unit. A blocked condenser dramatically reduces drying performance and increases cycle times.
If your dryer is taking multiple cycles to dry a load, shutting off mid-cycle, or producing a burning smell, don’t ignore it. Find out more about our tumble dryer repair service.
When Maintenance Isn’t Enough
Sometimes a spring clean reveals a problem that goes beyond what a wipe-down can fix. If any of your appliances are showing signs of a fault — unusual noises, error codes, poor performance, or visible damage — it’s always better to get it diagnosed early. Small faults have a habit of becoming expensive ones if left.
Domestic Repairs Ltd provides fast, reliable appliance repairs across Ruislip, Hillingdon, and the Greater London area. Our experienced engineers carry a wide range of parts, and in most cases we can complete the repair in a single visit.
